York

When you Hire a VW California Ocean at our Yorkshire collection office, we would recommend that you spend some time in York. The historic capital of Yorkshire. Two thousand years ago the Romans built a fort on the site of York. 800 years ago the Vikings left their mark. And so have the Tudors and the Victorians. So today York is a magical walled city with cobbled streets and old world charm. A must on any travellers Yorkshire to-do list. When you are visiting York we can personally recommend a trip to York Minster which was built in 1070.

The York Railway museum is also worth a visit. It really is the finest railway museum in the world and contains our 2 favourite trains (yes that is a thing) The Mallard and The Rocket

Also enjoy shopping and great dining in the York Shambles which is the most historic street in the city. dating back to the 14th century.

The Yorkshire Dales

The great thing about hiring a VW Campervan in Yorkshire is that you can move about this large county seeing some world class sights in a short period of time and fill your days with wonder.

The Yorkshire Dales is just such a sight. It is magical and not to be missed.

Some places that we would recommend for a visit include:

Mallham Cove a massive amphitheatre of limestone cliff that is 260 feet high.

The Blacksheep Brewery – Paul Theakston founded this world class brewery in 1992. Brewed with passion in The Dales. Yorkshire at its very best!

The Settle to Carlisle Railway Line – This beautiful line was opened as a passenger line in 1876. Travelling over 20 viaducts, 14 tunnels along the 72 mile track. This is one of the most memorable railway journeys in England. A must!

The North Yorkshire Coast

And not to labour the point but because you have decided to hire a VW Campervan in Yorkshire you are now ready to go the coast (and have a few laughs). And what an amazing coast it is full of natural beauty, history and active adventure with some great driving roads to boot!

Some activities that we would recommend on your Yorkshire trip would include

Whitby – an historic fishing port this is a fascinating place. With links to Captain Cook and Dracula. You can take your time to climb the 199 steps to the abbey and refuel on some of the best fish & chips in the county.

Scarborough – A place to make family memories. Simply enjoy traditional seaside fun. Scarborough is Britain’s original seaside resort. Promising a day with picturesque beaches, exciting attractions and a rich history.

We would also highly recommend a drive from York to Robin Hood’s Bay. It is a major benefit of renting a VW Campervan in Yorkshire. You get to enjoy the amazing roads in this gorgeous part of the world.  This drive is the best drive in the North of England according to Lonely Planet. Magical!

Coastal Night Walk & Stargazing – Robin Hood’s Bay. We tried the Robins Hoods Bay 5 mile night walk over Christmas. We were blessed with a clear night and the moon and the stars were heavenly. Finished off with a drink at The Smugglers in front of the open fire before heading back to the campsite. So cosy!
